The Origins of the Game : Hockey-like games involving sticks and balls have been played for thousands of years. Historical records show that a crude form of hockey was played in Egypt 4,000 years ago, and in Ethiopia around 1,000 BC.
The contemporary sport of ice hockey was developed in Canada, most notably in Montreal, where the first indoor hockey game was played on March 3, 1875.
Global Fan Base and Audience: As mentioned above hockey has more than 2 billion fans in the world. These fans include both the fans of field hockey as well as ice hockey. The contemporary field hockey sport was first played in England in the 1800s. More than 117 countries participate in hockey around the world. In the 2018/19 season, the total league revenue of the NHL was 5.09 billion U.S. dollars.
